Good news everyone! GMC has allowed for a new method of English proficiency to be accepted. Say hello to the Occupational English Test (OET)!

What is the OET?

It is an English language proficiency test which assess the language and communication skills of healthcare professionals. Which professionals, you ask?

  • Dentistry
  • Dietetics
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Optometry
  • Pharmacy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Podiatry
  • Radiography
  • Speech Pathology
  • Veterinary Science

We are only concerned about the Medicine version (as that's what is required by the GMC to get registered), which I will try to discuss about at length.

Structure of the exam

The OET judges your listening, reading, writing and speaking abilities but emphasizes a medical and healthcare aspect.
