The documents that you need to submit for Tier 2 is pretty limited and almost the same for everyone. You need to show up at the booked date and time at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) with all the papers and submit them according the system of your countries VAC.

Some countries, e.g. USA, you have the option to mail them the papers, with the bio-metrics taken at a separate location. In other countries, e.g. Bangladesh, you have to attend the appointment where your documents will be scanned and also bio-metric information will be taken at the same day, just like the visitor visa.

They will also take your fingerprints, so keep in mind that if you have henna on your hands, you will not be allowed to proceed as it doesn’t allow for a clear scan.Your case will be well explained in the online application part, or you can always have a look at your countries VAC website.

What documents do I have to provide for Tier 2 visa?

  1. A Cover letter
  2. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
  3. Criminal records certificate
  4. TB clearance certificate (if you are from any of the listed countries)
  5. Additional documents
    1. Maintenance letter from sponsor / Bank statement having £945 for 3 months (If employer is not a fully A-rated sponsors)
    2. Certificate of full registration as a medical practitioner in the UK (GMC)
    3. Certificate of full registration as a medical practitioner in your country
    4. Tenancy agreement from the previous stay in the UK
    5. Previous/expired passports from the last 10 years

Check to see if your country’s VAC requires you to provide photocopies of all of your documents and supply them accordingly.

Cover letter for Tier 2 Visa

Find a redacted copy of my cover letter here to have an idea how the things were chalked down.

Please note that if in your online application you stated holding any sort of previous nationality, dual citizenship, or status such as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) in the last 10 years, these should be explained in your letter, especially if you still have any expired passports in your possession. Please also note that OCI and NICOP come under visas and not passports.

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

This is one of the very vital documents for your Tier 2 visa application and you must have noticed the entire application is made on the basis of this. The vital information that you need from your CoS are:

  1. Sponsor details (Your Official Employer in the UK)
  2. Start and End Dates (those are your visa start and end dates)
  3. Job title
  4. Gross Salary
  5. Tick to certify maintenance

Read more on Certificate of Sponsorship here – The Formula for CoS.

And here is the most vital page:

Criminal records certificate

This is document is a MUST, and is covered in our post on obtaining criminal records certificate. It is also known as Police verification certificate in many countries I highly recommend reading the linked article separately to know in detail about this Tier 2 visa document.

You need police clearance certificate in order to apply for Tier 2 visa

TB clearance certificate

Another document you must provide in order to apply for a Tier 2 visa is a test to determine if you are positive for tuberculosis. You’ll need to have a tuberculosis test if you’re coming to the UK for more than 6 months and are a resident of any of the following countries.

You’ll be given a chest x-ray to test for TB. If the result of the x-ray isn’t clear you may also be asked to give a sputum sample. If your test shows that you don’t have TB, you’ll be given a certificate which is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. Include this certificate with your UK visa application.

Can I not have a TB test?

You won’t need a TB test if any of the following apply:

  • you’re a diplomat accredited to the UK
  • you’re a returning UK resident and haven’t been away for more than 2 years
  • you lived for at least 6 months in a country where TB screening is not required by the UK, and you’ve been away from that country for no more than 6 months

Does my child need TB testing as well?

All children must see a clinician who will decide if they need a chest x-ray. Children under 11 will not normally have a chest x-ray taken.

You must take your child to an approved clinic and complete a health questionnaire. If the clinician decides your child doesn’t have TB, they’ll give you a certificate. Include this certificate with your child’s UK visa application.

What to do if a tier 2 visa (or tier 2 dependent visa) applicant is pregnant?

You can choose:

  • an x-ray with an extra shield to protect you and your unborn child in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters
  • a sputum test- there may be an extra fee and you could wait up to 8 weeks for results
  • to wait until after delivery

If you don’t want to be tested, you can use an x-ray taken within the last 3 months at a UK-approved screening clinic. Ask a clinician at an approved clinic to review your x-ray. If it’s accepted, the clinician will give you a certificate to send with your UK visa application.

Additional Documents

Maintenance letter/Bank Statement

As mentioned above, if your employer is not a fully approved (A-rated) sponsor, and they haven’t ticked “Y” for maintenance then you must provide a bank statement having £945 for the last 90 days before you apply. You can contact your HR about it also; sometimes they issue a maintenance letter.

If you are also applying for a dependent, please understand first what that means.

A ‘dependant’ is any of the following:

  • your husband, wife, or partner
  • your child under 18
  • your child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependant

You must show that your dependants can be supported while they’re in the UK. Each dependant must have £630 available to them whether they apply with you or separately. This is in addition to the £945 you must have to support yourself.

You must have proof you have the money, and that it’s been in your bank account or your dependant’s bank account for at least 90 days before you or they apply.

You won’t need evidence of your savings if you have a:

Educational Documents

Not mandatory. I had added those just because I mentioned about them in the cover letter.

Tenancy agreement from the previous stay

If you had stayed in a rented accommodation and you can make one, I suggest you do that. Here is a redacted copy of my tenancy agreement. Any sort of booking of a place will also do to back your claim of your previous stay in the UK.

Previous passports

If you still have an old passport that has been used in the last 10 years and is now either expired or of nationality you no longer hold, provide it. This is so they can verify transparency regarding your travel in the last 10 years and that you have provided criminal record certificates to all countries you’ve stayed in for at least 12 months, consecutively or not, in the last 10 years.

So there you have it, all the documents you need to submit in order to continue on your road to the UK by getting a Tier 2 visa. Good luck!

    Hello!
Could you let me know when exactly during the process is the TB certificate required to be submitted? My city is not on the list of approved testing centres, so I’m trying to plan a trip to another city such that I can get the TB testing and the VHS appointment done in one go.

  2. This is really informative. Thank you. Could I please know under which section should I upload the cover letter? I mean on the VFS upload page there are few separate sections like “Accommodation Temporary/Permanent”, “Educational Evidence”, “Additional Documents” and etc. Should I upload the cover letter under the very first section on this page which is “Accommodation Temporary/Permanent” or should I upload it under “Additional Documents”? Thank you

What are the document I need to keep handy for getting the visa as I need to arrange the document in advance so that there should not be any challenge . Thank you in advance

  4. I’m soon going to be applying for Tier 2 visa, but my funds in my account have been present only for 75 days. So wanted to know if UKVI accepts bank statements of parents as evidence of maintenance of funds?

    1. Unfortunately, it says it has to be personal funds. But in your situation, what you can do is attach parent’s statements along with their undertaking that they are in a position to support you if you need money.

Thank you for the very useful post. I have two queries …
    1) Is police clearance certificate is a must during online application or it is Okay to provide during VAC visit and document submission?
    2) Do we need to provide any passport size photograph during any part of the Visa application/ document submission process?

    1. 1) Police clearance is not needed during online application. You need to submit that when submitting your papers and passport.
      2) No. they take your photo and fingerprints as a part of your biometrics when submitting your application in VAC.

  6. Hi, wonderful article. Had a doubt, due to cover 19 all the visa offices are shut down for the time being. If I receive my cos, by what time should I file my T2 visa application?

  7. Faisal Ahmad

What if I put a big amount in my account 4 months before I apply? Do they want the source and proof of regular income as they do in case of visit visa?

    1. Why are you showing your bank account for your Tier 2 visa? Has maintenance not been checked?

  8. About tenancy documentation, I stayed at a hostel in my ID check visit and in my Tier 2 visa application i didn’t wrote about it i only wrote the hospital address. What can i do ?can i write it in my cover letter

    Hello
    Thanks for your amazing write-up.
In my old passport both my father and minr s name had a few spelling mistakes!
Should I need to provide an affidavit regarding that?

  11. Hi Docro Ibreez and Ivan. I was wondering I am in UK doing a clinical attachment on a 2 year visit visa, do i have to fly back to my home country to get a Tier 2 or can I do it while I am in UK.

  12. Hi Dr Ibreez and Ivan, my start date on COS was changed from 1st April to 18th April 2019 till 31st March 2020, can I still write my intended duration of stay in the UK 1 year in visa application? Or should I write 11 months 13 days? Regards

    1. To be clear just write the actual date difference. It’s more than 6 months and less than three years anyway.

  13. Hello, my question is regarding bank statement. I moved from Maldives to Pakistan in this February and now ( in April) I am applying for my Tier 2 visa. I have bank statement of 6 months from Maldives bank account ( Aug 2018 to 30th Jan 2019) and of around 2 months from Pakistani bank account ( 19 Feb to till date ). I am planning to show both of these, is it ok ? I submitted my savings in Pakistani account.

  14. Hello,
Thank you so much for this blog. It has guided me throughout my UK transition process.
Please I would like some clarification about the TB Clearance.
I currently reside in a country where TB screening is not required by the UK but I will be visiting my home country (where TB screening is required) for 4 weeks after which i will return to my country of residence. Would I still need to do the test for tier 2 visa?
Thank you in anticipation for your response.

    1. We’re so happy to hear that the blog has been helpful to your getting to the UK! No you will not need TB clearance.

  15. Hi, about the tenancy agreement from previous stay – does it mean for the plab 2 visit? I stayed at a friends place half the time and half the time at the academy accommodation. So how do I show that?

    1. In your previous visit visa application where did you mention about your accommodation? Try to follow that up with proper documentation.

  16. Hi Dr. Ivan,

Your site is very informative , I am just waiting for my cos to arrive anytime this month and I would like to asked if its better to state in my cover letter my previous rejection of tourist visa when applying tier 2 general ?
I visited UK with c- tourist visa to take a short course that lasted about 2-3 months which was also declared in my application. However, I decided to take another course and to think that my visa have given me 180 days I am aware that technically i can extend my stay without breaking the rules of being over limit. Unfortunately, this cause me the refusal for 2nd time attempting to apply for tourist visa last year.

I am very worried that it might affect my application obtaining tier 2 visa approval for this year.

Thank you for your time and looking forward some of your advise.

    1. Hello,
You will be asked during your online TIER 2 application if you’ve ever been denied a visa to the UK before, so it is essential you are truthful about it.

  17. Thanks. She was hoping we would be a sponsor for her, but sadly as we don’t have a licence we cant, however, the Home Office have given her an alternative in which she has to send a ton of other “evidence” and we are just hoping to help her…”Every bit helps”

    1. Hello again,
I haven’t really heard of such case before.
But, if that’s the case then she can add a letter on your official letterhead stating her job title, expected date of commencement, duration of contract, annual salary, living arrangements etc and signed by authorized signatories.

  18. I want to write a letter of support for one of my employees – we are not a Tier 2 Sponsor, but I want to write a letter of recommendation or help her with her application. She is happy for me to include her salary details and living arrangements etc
Can someone tell me if there is a good template I can use?
    Many thanks in advance.

    1. Hello,
Tier 2 application only needs the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from the employer. Otherwise, no letter of recommendation actually plays a role in the application process.

  19. Thank you so much both of you for this amazing information .
I have a question that if I want to take my dependent (partner) and apply along with me what other documents will I need to add and will there be any chance of visa rejection of dependent on tier 2 visa.

    1. For your dependent, you need to make separate online application for visa. And add:
      1. Proof of relationship.
      2. Criminal record certificate.
      3. If maintenance is not provided by the trust, then proper proof of personal savings having proper amount.
      4. Your CoS.
The rejection of PBS type visas like Tier 2 mainly happens, for lack of proper documents or IHS not being paid properly. Otherwise, rejections are pretty low.

  20. HI dr Ibreez and Ivan
I have received my Tier 2 certificate of sponsorship. But not yet got my GMC registration,it may take about 2-3 months…Is a GMC registration number mandatory to apply for a tier 2 visa from India.Or can i get a tier 2 visa, come to UK and then take my GMC registration.

    1. Hello, it’s not mandatory, but you should arrange obtaining your GMC registration as soon as you can once you’re in the UK.

    1. Hello, all that is need is TB certificate (if required) along with a bank statement on your part covering their stay if your CoS will not give maintenance for your dependants.

  21. Hi Ivan and Ibreez,
    Thank you for your help,
I have a question please. Is the immigration health surcharge payment linked to one visa application only?
I mean I paid for IHS and I submitted my visa application without payment the visa fees and I want to edit some data related to my application but I can’t because I have already submitted it. So, if I miss my visa appointment, in this case, can I reapply for the visa again editing the data and using the same IHS I paid before?

    1. You’re welcome.
Unfortunately, if you have paid for IHS in that application already, that means you have already crossed the stage where you could amend it.
Now application will be null and void if you just don’t show up. No problem with that.
But, you can’t use your IHS payment on another application. You will have to pay again, and later within 6 weeks (as they say) the extra IHS will be refunded back to your card.

  22. No, I have not returned to this country since I left it one year ago and I have been staying in my mother country since then.

    1. If you hadn’t returned to that country, then that criminal record certificate should be still valid.
Remember to explain them well in your visa application.

  23. before one year, i was in a gulf country and i got a criminal record but it has been written that it is valid for 3 months and it was valid when i left this country. can i submit it in my application or do i have to issue another recent one? thank you for your support

  24. Shuvamay Chowdhury

    Hi Dr Ivan,
I have applied for GMC and submitted everything to GMC. Now GMC have invited me for ID check. In the meantime I have been offered a job. Now, I am planning to apply for Tier 2 visa. Unless I physically attend GMC, my registration will not be issued and active.
Can I apply for Tier 2 visa without having GMC paper at hand from Bangladesh?
    Thanks

    1. You can, but if at all possible it would be ideal to complete your GMC registration completely before applying for the TIER 2 visa.

  25. Hi Doctor Ibreez and Ivan,
This is an awesome post. i have been a loyal follower of this blog. I have two questions if you dont mind:
    1) Could we provide multiple (2 or more) bank accounts statements in order to reach the £945 target?
    2) In regards with previous tenancy agreement from previous stay, I have stayed with 3 different landlords via spareroom without any tenancy agreement, would it affect my application and any idea what else I can do with it?
Thank you so much once again for this awesome blog. Keep it up Doctors

    1. Hello, we are glad to hear that you’ve been following our blog 🙂 As to your questions:
      1) Technically speaking, UKVI has said nothing regarding the number of accounts you can use to show, but one can imagine that it would be less of a hassle as well as less confusing if you were to just provide one single personal savings account (remember it must be in an account for at least 90 days).
      2) A tenancy agreement is not a necessary document to provide, rather it is just given to further back your statement of staying in the UK for the duration outline in your application. If you wish, you can simply give the addresses of the places you stayed in your online application, and mention in your cover letter that you did not have any sort of written agreement with these individuals. If you are able to contact them, it may be in your best interest to do so in case UKVI contacts them to verify your statement. This is not to say that they will do this, but they can.
Hope your questions have been answered. Good luck!
