Many of you have undoubtedly heard the news put out by the General Medical Council (GMC) of UK that they will be accepting USMLE, MCCQE, and AMC pass results for consideration of full registration. This would then allow these individuals to work in the UK as doctors. So let’s see what this entails.

GMC Registration via USMLE

If you have passed Step 2 CS on or before March 13th, 2020, and also passed Step 1 and Step 2 CK (at any time) you can think about applying for GMC registration in order to work as a doctor in the UK. Please note that you must not have graduated from a medical college in the UK or Switzerland.

Confirmation email from GMC that other steps can be done at any time!

Now what would this all require you to do? You’d still need to meet the criteria that GMC has set out for all of its applicants in that if you wish to obtain FULL registration, you would need to complete an acceptable pattern of internship.

Wondering what an acceptable pattern of internship looks like? Check out our article on internship criteria.

English Requirements for GMC Registration

If you don’t know already, GMC also requires that you prove your English language proficiency either by IELTS or by OET. This would be required at the time you submit your application for GMC registration. The IELTS/OET score requirement is the same for you as it would be for someone applying via the other routes of GMC registration.

For IELTS, you must have a minimum of 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in all four modules (listening, reading, writing and speaking). So, if you got 8 overall but in writing you got 6.5- you’re not eligible.

For OET, you will need to get a ‘B’ in each module of the exam (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) in order to be considered eligible in the eyes of the GMC.

GMC Registration via MCCQE

If you’ve completed Canadian MCCQE 2 in English on or before October 27th, 2020, you can think about applying for GMC registration in order to work as a doctor in the UK. Please note that you must not have graduated from a medical college in the UK or Switzerland.

Now what would this all require you to do? You’d still need to meet the criteria that GMC has set out for all of its applicants in that if you wish to obtain FULL registration, you would need to complete an acceptable pattern of internship.

GMC Registration via AMC

If you’ve passed the AMC Clinical Examination on or before March 5th, 2020, you can think about applying for GMC registration in order to work as a doctor in the UK. Please note that you must not have graduated from a medical college in the UK or Switzerland.

Now what would this all require you to do? You’d still need to meet the criteria that GMC has set out for all of its applicants in that if you wish to obtain FULL registration, you would need to complete an acceptable pattern of internship.

  1. Hello everyone,

I’m a USA internal Medicine Resident who would finish my Residency and plan to move to UK after finishing my MD.
Can some one please explain me the process of working in UK with a USA MD. And I need a visa.

    Thanks!

    1. You would need to find ways of getting GMC registration first. As this article already explains how you can GMC registration using your USMLE. Once you have done that, your next target is looking for a job, which is discussed here – how to apply for a job in the NHS in detail. Once you land a job, visa sponsorship will come with it. And then you start working at the job you got. Then you start thinking about your clinical training in your specialty – get an overview here – Overview of Specialty Training in the UK.

  2. Atiya Tul Quddoos

Hi there, I completed my internship in 2000, straight in surgery for 12 months (no medicine). However, I started my private practice right after that and continued for at least 4 years. I also went back home in 2019 where I worked as a junior medical officer in medicine and pediatrics for 3 months in a teaching hospital. Can that fulfill the requirement for approved internship pattern?

Since USMLE step 2 cs is removed, what is the new pass date for IMG entering UK after clearing USMLE?

        1. If you’ve completed Canadian MCCQE 2 in English on or before October 27th, 2020, you can think about applying for GMC registration in order to work as a doctor in the UK.

  4. Hello, I have given USMLE step-1, step-2 CK and step-2 CS. So, I am planning to apply for GMC Registration through this route. I have also given MRCP Part-1 and waiting for the result. If I fail in MRCP part-1, Will I be still eligible to apply for GMC Registration?

  5. I have passed USMLE step-1, step-2 CK & step-2 CS. I have given MRCP part-1 examination and awaiting the result. If I fail in it, Am I still eligible to apply through this pathway?

  6. Hi doctors.

Now the new update from the US is to cancel USMLE Step 2CS, how does that affect the GMC registration in the UK?

    1. It doesn’t. It is retrospective. GMC registration is only accessible to those who passed USMLE Step 2 CS before March 13, 2020. So, if someone had not ALREADY passed step 2 CS before March 13, 2020 – they can not apply for GMC registration using USMLE.

  7. I want to know if the usmle route is only applicable for people who have done step 1 and step 2 before March 2020. Will the usmle route be applicable for the future?

  8. Why the passing date of step 2cs has to be before march 2020?? What for those who have given step 2 cs after that??cant they get the entry??

    1. Possible explanation is upto that date step 2 CS was assessing practical skills in person, but as I said ‘possible’ explanation. Policies are made by authorities and not always the reasoning behind that is explained.

  9. Hello Dr Ibreez, I have already given step1 of USMLE and now with Step2 CS cancelled, do you think that I should give PLABs and apply for GMC registration or should I give step 2 ck and apply via USMLE pathway.

  10. Hi. I wanted to ask about the specification that says before march 31 2020 for USMLE exams. I mean if you have given exam after the said date, you won’t be eligible for this pathway? Because Prometrics were closed till June 2020 and Covid started by end of march and early april, so anyone after march 31st 2020 is not eligible?

  11. HI Dr. Ibrahim! Do you have any Idea whether this change will stay here for atleast 2 years or do you think it is only for this year to cover up doctor shortage? I’ll ask GMC directly, but need your educated guess. Thanks. Jazakallah
